What is Microneedling?

You sit at an easel. Blank canvas before you. Your view: a sky full of simmering colors from orange to purple to pink to light blue; a sailboat out on the water before you, heading for shore to tie up for the night; a rising cliff, painted crimson by the sun’s setting rays; water lapping on the shore, lulling the night to rest; a breeze through your hair; smell of salt on the air. You take a deep breath and begin. What will you paint? How will you paint it? When you’re finished with the canvas, how will you care for it? Will you frame it? Hang it in a prominent location to remember this day?

The canvas you just painted is your skin. The largest organ in you body, the skin deserves your unreserved attention as much as the canvas you just painted by the shore. How are you caring for it?

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling.

A new treatment in the skin care and skin beauty industry. Perhaps you’ve heard of it. Perhaps you haven’t. But what is it? How does it work? Is it for you?

These are the three questions we at MD Pen aim to answer for you.

Microneedling Defined

Like the name implies, microneedling uses needles to puncture the skin in tiny (micro) depths in order to stimulate your body’s natural healing process. Born out of the principles of acupuncture, microneedling as it’s performed today was first used in 1995. Since then microneedling has taken off as a treatment for all kinds of skin conditions from encouraging hair growth, stimulating collagen production (the supportive substance in your skin), and improving scars, acne, and other skin discolorations.

The microneedling procedure, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy, is highly effective in reducing the signs of aging such as line and wrinkles as well through the stimulation of collagen production in the body.

How does Microneedling Work?

In essence, microneedling is the creation of tiny injuries to the skin, which sends signals to the body to heal. Like any cut you get, your body sends out signals for repairs. Platelets, blood cells that stop bleeding, arrive and clot the blood, forming a scab. Beneath the scab, new skin cells form. And it’s these new skin cells microneedling aim to capitalize on.

Collagen is the most abundant protein present in all the body including the muscles, skin, blood, bones, cartilage, and ligaments as well as all the body’s organs and tissues. It’s main function is to sustain tendons, skin and cartilage, and it provides integrity, firmness and elasticity to their structures. Collagen is the substance that gives skin its elasticity, its youthful and healthy appearance, and glowing, vibrant skin. It’s the skeleton of your skin.

Our body makes collagen in abundance naturally until about 30 years of age, after which production begins to decline. By the age of 40, collagen production declines by 1% per year. Thus our skin’s structure weakens, thins, and sags. This natural process is what is the primary culprit in the aging of our skin and appearance, and this is what most people want to pause.

How to Cope with Collagen Loss

Collagen loss is part of the aging process and is impossible to stop altogether. However, there are steps we can take to slow down the loss and keep our younger skin longer. A healthy diet, vitamin E supplements, and minimizing exposure to the sun can help. Caring for your skin with the right lotions to help block free radicals that attack the skin and speed up aging is also an important consideration for us.

Besides these natural processes, fickle, appearance-obsessed humans in their infinite desire for the Fountain of Youth, have invented cosmetic procedures (either invasive or non-invasive) to turn back the clock on our skin. The most popular invasive (or major surgery involving the cutting and removing of skin tissue) procedures are facelifts.

MD Pen realizes we can’t change human nature. We also embrace the reality that our appearance and how we feel about our appearance is central to our self-esteem, which spills over to all areas of our lives from work output to behaviors to activities in our lives. With our mission to help those who want to improve their self-esteem, MD Pen promotes microneedling and its ability to stimulate collagen production in the body. A microneedling procedure is a non-invasive alternative to facelifts that yields amazing results and offers those who are unhappy with their appearance hope for improvement. MD Pen wants to help you lead your best life ever!

Who is Microneedling For?

Microneedling is for everyone! It’s successful in patients seeking to erase fine lines, acne scars, stretch marks and improve one’s skin tone, color and texture. The signs of aging (fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging of the skin) improves immensely. It works on all skin types and pigmentation. It is a minimally invasive procedure, eliminating the days and weeks of care entailed from a facelift. It is quick, mostly painless, and inexpensive. Microneedling is an option for those who want to improve their appearance without breaking the bank or enduring the long-term care of wounds.

As long as you are in good health, don’t have any active infections, lesions, or any known wound healing problems such as hemophilia, and aren’t pregnant or breastfeeding, then microneedling is safe and effective. We wouldn’t recommend microneedling on anyone younger than 16.

The Anatomy of a Microneedling Procedure

Using MD Pen’s microneedling device, a trained professional will treat all areas of the skin you desire with a one-time use, disposable needle tip containing many different needles. An advantage of MD Pen’s microneedling device is its circular head, which concentrates needle pricks. The pin pricks will stimulate new collagen and elastin production as the skin begins to repair itself. The epidermis will be softer and plumper, smoothing out wrinkles. The pin pricks leave channels through which our proprietary skin care products can be more effective and absorbed more easily in the skin. This will enhance the effects and make the microneedling procedure more effective.

The procedure itself lasts only about 15-30 minutes depending on the area being treated, but allow for longer for prep work, after care instructions, and the purchase of skin care products essential to your aftercare results. MD Pen offers a wide-variety of after care skin products. Shop online today!

Following your microneedling procedure, you may experience redness for a few days in the treated area. Your skin will feel silky smooth and glow afterwards. Load up on the skin care products your practitioner recommends and follow his or her usage instructions. Going makeup free for a week or so immediately afterwards while you heal is not a bad idea. Itchy skin, especially for those with sensitive skin, is a commonly-reported side effect for a few days following your microneedling procedure.

Aftercare for a Microneedling Procedure

MD Pen has developed its own line of skincare products to better help the microneedling patient recover and maximize the benefits of a microneedling procedure. We strongly believe in taking advantage of your newly opened channels in the skin to allow our serums to penetrate to the lower layers of the skin, rejuvenating from the floor up if you will. We do this through several key ingredients:

  • Human Growth Factors. First discovered back in the 1950’s by an Italian developmental biologist named Rita Levi-Montalcini and tan American biochemist named Stanley Cohen who earned the Nobel Prize in Science for their efforts, human growth factors are amazing at building collage. Found in abundance throughout the body, growth factors are large proteins that float between cells communicating crucial messages relevant to growth, healing, and survival. They’re manufactured by all types of cells. In the skin, this includes those comprising both the outermost epidermal layer and the deeper dermis — so, we’re talking the keratinocytes you can plainly see in the mirror, the fibroblasts (collagen factories), and melanocytes (pigment-making cells) nestled down below. However, just like collagen, human growth factors slow down production by our late 20’s, again resulting in less cell growth and thinner, less supple skin. Simply adding in serums with human growth factors to your skincare routine will result in a restoration of the skin and its functions. Coupled with a microneedling procedure, your skin will be its best yet! Human growth factors are either bioengineered in the lab or they are taken from human stem cells. Rest assured all of MD Pen’s skincare products are vegan formulations containing organic ingredients that are paraben-, petrochemical- and SLS/SLE-free, and are never tested on animals.
  • Hyaluronic Acid. Like collagen, hyaluronic acid (HA) is a compound occuring in almost every cell in your body. It acts like a sponge, able to hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Hence, it’s the king AND queen of moisturizers all in one! Due to the wear and tear our skin faces every day from environmental hazards such as free radicals, pollution, and nature’s harshness of the sun, wind, water, and cold, our skin gets dehydrated quickly. Being in most of our cells, hyaluronic acid plays a critical role in our skin cells’ walls. When hyaluronic acid is applied to the skin, it both moisturizes and forms a permeable barrier, protecting the dermis and boosting elastin in the skin as it binds water to cells. Our hyaluronic acid is plant-derived.

How Long Do the Results of Microneedling Last and How Many Treatments Do I Need?

Of course, as in all medical treatments for various conditions, there is no one answer fits all. For some, one treatment might be enough. For others, a series of treatments might be called for, which can be spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. Our Microneedling MD Pen is able to adjust depth. This allows for customization for the patient. In general, at each successive procedure, the practitioner is able to go a bit deeper at each session as the skin thickens and is more tolerant of the treatment. This has many benefits, the foremost being stimulation of deep tissue collagen production and deeper penetration channels for our aftercare products.

In conclusion, the number of microneedling procedure sessions all depend on your goals and the results, which also vary depending on the individual. MD Pen offers microneedling products no matter your goals. Our microneedling skincare products will help you recover from a procedure and stay hydrated longer. Visit us today to find out more!

The final results of a microneedling procedure can take months to materialize as collagen continues to produce in the stimulated area for 3-6 months after the procedure. However, results are seen almost immediately. Like all medical procedures, there are small risks of scarring, bruising, bleeding, infection, and skin pigment problems. We here at MD Pen have a network of providers you can search to find a reputable practitioner in your area who has been trained by one of our top-notch microneedling professionals. It’s important to ask questions at your initial consultation before choosing any healthcare provider in any field.
