On this week’s Serum Spotlight, we are highlighting one of the most exciting and effective ingredients in skincare: Copper Peptides.
What Are Copper Peptides?
Copper peptides are fragments of copper proteins that are small enough to penetrate the skin.  Copper has long been known to have positive health benefits. Yet, the focus on copper peptides as a skincare product really began in 1973, when Dr. L. Pickart discovered that copper in its isolated form helped to prolong the survival of cells. Since that discovery, there have been numerous studies on the benefits of copper peptides for healthy skin, many of which guided us in the creation of our unique Copper Peptide + HA Mist.
What Are the Benefits of Copper Peptides (CP’s) for Skin Health?
- Copper Peptides Can Help to Repair Damaged Skin.
Copper is a component of roughly 50 different enzymes, many of which are antioxidants, or responsible for repairing damaged tissue. CP’s activate the production of these enzymes, which “remove damaged proteins” from molecules that provide structure to skin cells. As a result, damaged skin is regenerated, creating a healthier and more uniform look.
- Copper Peptides Facilitate the Production of Collagen, Elastin, and Hyaluronic Acid.
Collagen is responsible for thickening and smoothing out skin, which can reduce unevenness caused by fine lines or cellulite. Elastin helps the skin to return to its original shape after stretching, and is beneficial to prolonging the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Hyaluronic acid is a humectant naturally found in the body, that keeps skin hydrated by aiding in the absorption and retention of moisture. The results of having a high presence of these three elements in the body are youthful, healthy, and smooth skin.
- Copper Also Has Strong Antibacterial Properties.
Studies have shown that copper has a demonstrated ability to inactivate viruses and bacteria like E.coli, and in small doses can help to maintain a healthy balance of bacteria on the skin.
