First impressions matter.

Although it shouldn’t matter what you look like on the outside and it should be what matters on the inside that counts, human nature is not that sophisticated. We make judgements based on appearance, and it takes years to un-train ourselves not to do this.

Thus, if you have a skin pigment, especially on the face, it can affect your life in many ways. It can affect who will hire you. It affects your self-esteem, especially if you’ve had the pigment since a child and experienced teasing because of it. It can ultimately affect your dating life as well. Although skin pigmentations may not be preventable, they are treatable.

What Are Skin Pigmentations?

Skin pigmentation refers to a darkening or lightening of the skin because of the skin’s imbalance in production of melanin, the substance in our body that gives our skin its color.

MDPen, a provider of microneedling products, believes microneedling is one way to improve the appearance of various skin pigmentations. Skin pigmentations can be categorized into two basic types:

Hyperpigmentation. The most common type of skin pigmentation, hyperpigmentation is usually darker than your skin and can be caused by the sun, aging, changes in hormones, and from certain medications.

Hypopigmentation. This pigmentation is usually lighter than your skin.

The Common Varieties of Skin Pigmentations

Age spots. A common hyperpigmentationage spots are usually flat and dark spots that can be seen in areas that experience frequent exposure to the sun such as the face, neck, hands, arms, and back. Age also plays a factor as the cumulative exposure to the sun has an effect as well. Avoiding the sun and eating a healthy diet since unsaturated fats have shown to accelerate the formation of age spots are recommended preventative measures for age spots.

Freckles. Another commonhyperpigmentation, freckles resemble brown peppery spots in the skin, which are commonly seen on children and young adults. Freckles, unlike age spots, may fade with age. Caused by the overproduction of melanin and overexposure to the sun’s UV rays, freckles can be prevented by limiting exposure time in the sun.

Melasma.  A hyperpigmentation that is caused by too much estrogen and progesterone in the body. Hence, this condition often affects pregnant women, those doing hormone replacement therapy, or women taking contraceptives. The sun harkens melasma and causes spots on neck, nose, cheek, lips and forehead.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). This hyperpigmentation is the most common skin pigmentation problems for those with darker skin. It is caused by inflamed wounds such as razor cuts, burns, or even some pimples. Melanin is overproduced and if exposed to sunlight, PIH can become darker. Again, limiting sun exposure is the key to limiting PIH formation.

Birthmarks. These are usually present since birth and are caused by abnormal blood vessels in the skin. These obviously can’t be prevented but limiting sun exposure can keep them from getting worse.

Treatments for Skin Pigmentations

Skin pigments are treatable and the results of treatments are a noticeable reduction in its appearance. Most pigments will improve naturally over time; however, if you want an almost imperceptible appearance of your discolorationa professional treatment will be required.

Luckily for you, there are many treatments available that can help your skin discoloration. Speak to your practitioner about which option is best for you in your case.

Microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion removes the upper most layer of skin to get rid of sunspots and other types of superficial and minimal discoloration.

Chemical peel. chemical peel removes the top layer of skin as well, but is a bit more powerful than microdermabrasion. It in effect speeds up your skin’s natural process of  exfoliation.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL). Very effective against sun-induced discoloration, IPL uses light-based energy on the skin and targets the blood vessels. The light lifts up the skin discoloration.

Laser treatments. One of the more advanced treatments for skin pigmentation, laser treatments target the pigmented area only. The light of the laser is absorbed by the  pigmented cells and causes the pigment to break down.

Microneedling. Microneedling procedures involve the use of a pen and fine needles that deliver tiny pricks or injuries to your skin, which causes the body to begin the healing process. Also known as collagen induction therapy, the old layer of skin will peel off and the new layer of skin produced by the skin’s collagen is free from spots or marks.
