MicroNeedling Before and After

What is microneedling? microneedling is one of the latest non invasive, skin care procedures to combat anti-aging. A special pen, known as a microneedling pen, punctures the skin with tiny pricks to the lower levels of your skin. This stimulates a protein synthesis process that stimulates the skin to produce more collagen, the substance in your skin that gives you a more fuller, youthful look. Fine lines and wrinkles smooth out, scarring such as acne scarring is minimized, and stretch marks are diminished. With minimum recovery time, microneedling yields amazing results with not a lot of hassle.

What exactly are the results of microneedling? And what does the before and after care of microneedling look like? In this blog post, MDPen will describe the steps.

Most patients have a specific area of skin they want to treat. Before a microneedling procedure, there are no special steps that need to be taken unless you are using a topical medication for a skin condition. If so, you’ll need to stop applying this for 3-5 days before your procedure. Once you pick a top-notch microneedling practitioner such as an aesthetician, a physician, or a nurse, you’ll have an initial consultation to review the specific areas you would like treated and the hoped for results you’d like to see. Your microneedling physician will determine if microneedling can indeed help you with your particular need. Then your appointment is scheduled.

The procedure, which utilizes a microneedling pen full of tiny needles that deliver the little puncture wounds to the area you want treated, takes about an hour. After you arrive, you’ll be greeted and ushered into our treatment room. Your skin will be washed and sterilized. Then the treatment area will be numbed using Neuromed BLT numbing cream or some other numbing agent.

Despite the thousands of tiny pin-pricks delivered by the microneedling pen, microneedling overall is relatively painless and is over very quickly. After the micro needling, a soothing serum is applied, which serves two purposes: 1) to help the area heal 2) since during an MDPen micro needling treatment thousands of micro channels are created, it’s best to take advantage of this opportunity and infuse the skin with pure, high quality products that will help to maximize your results. We recommend our Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum and our Cellular Renewal Serum, both of which will help to enhance skin firmness and elasticity, while reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

In addition, we recommend MDPen Moisture + Recovery Gel, which will infuse the skin with Human Epidermal Growth Factors helps to further support skin repair and protect against future signs of aging. Containing the powerful ingredient hyaluronic acid, your skin will be rehydrated and softened to calm your skin after the micro needling procedure. Patients report this is their favorite part of the microneedling procedure because of the depth reached by the skin care products. Furthermore, even once the Neuromed BLT numbing cream wears off, patients report no pain.

Your skin may be slightly red immediately after the micro needling procedure due to the small injuries you sustained. Moreover, you may notice slight clotting of blood on the surface in small areas afterwards. In addition, immediately after your microneedling pen session, your skin may feel tight, dry, swollen, and sensitive to the touch. It may also look and feel sunburned.

The first 48 hours are crucial after a microneedling procedure in order to maximize the results. The redness will mostly likely be completely gone 24 hours after your procedure. In the short-term, your skin may be itchy and may may look and feel like sandpaper. This may last for 2-7 days as the treated skin flakes off and are replaced by the new tissue. In addition, adhere to these guidelines for micro needling aftercare:

  • Don’t wear sunscreen or makeup for minimum of 12 hours after microneedling treatments due to the contents in these products.
  • Wash the treated area a few hours after the procedure and before bed the first night. Make sure you use a gentle cleanser such as MDPen’s Hydrating Cleanser, which is specially formulated for micro needling aftercare
  • After 12 hours, makeup can be applied again; however, we recommend mineral makeup only. Continue use of your daily cleanser as well as use of our serums and recovery gel mask. Avoid any harsh skin care creams or treatments, especially in the first 24-48 hours, until your skin’s pores start to close.
  • Do not swim for 24 hours
  • Do not exercise for 24 hours
  • After 48 hours, a return to your regular skin care routine can be resumed. However, we strongly encourage using our skin care products for maximum results. We offer our Hydrating Cleanser, Copper + HA mist to promote water retention in the skin, and at least one of our serums, Pure Hyaluronic Acid, Tighten + Lift, Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Moisturizer, and/or Cellular Renewal Serums.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure for 10 days as well as alcohol-based tones

Before your microneedling session, you may have been feeling and looking older. After your microneedling session, your skin will glow as collagen production hits high gear. The added benefit of a micro needling pen is the created channels stay open, providing a deeper penetration of skin care products

The number of micro needling sessions required to achieve the results you are looking for will vary from person to person. Factors such as skin type and severity of scarring for example play a part. However, by persistently triggering collagen production and the healing process with a series of Micro Needling treatments, the body keeps repairing the skin incrementally and cumulatively to offer a result similar to fractional laser treatments or chemical peels, but without the side effects and extended downtime.

The results of multiple micro needling treatments are smoother, firmer, and younger looking skin. Micro needling is most commonly used on the face. However, any area of the skin can be treated form the neck, chest, hands, and more. For multiple microneedling sessions, MDPen recommends scheduling appointments about four weeks apart. The usual number of sessions most patients receive are between 5-8 sessions. In the case of surgical scars and stretch marks on the body, usually 8-10 sessions are required with a bit further wait time in-between sessions, each 5-6 weeks apart.
